Preparing Your Home for a Maine Coon Kitten

5 min read

Bringing home a Maine Coon kitten is an exciting milestone, but a little preparation goes a long way in making the transition smooth for both you and your new companion. Maine Coons are larger and more active than the average cat, so some of your setup decisions should account for their eventual adult size of 12 to 25 pounds.

Start with the essentials: a large, sturdy litter box (many owners find that top-entry or high-sided boxes work best to accommodate their size), high-quality kitten food recommended by your breeder, stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls, and a comfortable carrier for the trip home and future vet visits. Avoid flimsy plastic accessories — Maine Coons are strong cats, and lightweight items will get knocked around quickly. Invest in a solid cat tree that can support their weight; look for models rated for large breeds with wide, stable bases.

Kitten-proofing your home is similar to baby-proofing but with a feline twist. Secure loose electrical cords, remove or relocate toxic plants (lilies, poinsettias, and philodendrons are especially dangerous), and make sure small objects that could be swallowed are out of reach. Maine Coon kittens are notoriously curious and dexterous — they can open cabinet doors, turn on faucets, and get into spaces you wouldn't expect. Consider child-safety latches on cabinets that contain cleaning supplies or medications.

Set up a quiet "safe room" where your kitten can spend their first few days adjusting to their new environment. This should include their litter box, food, water, a cozy bed, and a few toys. Gradually expand their access to the rest of your home as they grow more confident. This controlled introduction reduces stress and helps your kitten feel secure from day one, building a foundation of trust that will last their lifetime.
